Designing the Perfect Coffeeshop in The Hague (With a Global Perspective)

There is something undeniably special about the cafe culture here in the Netherlands. Whether it’s a quick espresso on the way to the morning commute or a slow weekend flat white in the Zeeheldenkwartier, the environment you drink it in matters almost as much as the roast itself.

Lately, as I’ve been immersing myself in the local neighborhoods of South Holland, I’ve been thinking deeply about what makes a coffeeshop truly magnetic.

At SMN Design, our approach to studio life is a little different than standard architecture firms. We are a fully-remote team based around the globe, and we intentionally operate without a traditional physical office. This freedom is our greatest asset, beyond giving us a great flexibility both for the team and for our clients, it allows us to draw daily inspiration from international hospitality trends—from Milanese espresso bars to minimalist Xiamen tea houses—and bring those world-class perspectives directly to our clients.

But with my own home base now rooted here in The Hague, I am incredibly excited to blend our global expertise with the unique, local charm of this city.

If you are planning to open a new specialty coffee spot—or looking to renovate an existing space in The Hague, Delft, or the surrounding areas—you already know that pulling a great shot is only half the battle. The other half? Creating a physical space that stops people in their tracks, draws them in from the street, and makes them want to linger.

We specialize in high-end hospitality and retail environments. But to me, "high-end" doesn't just mean throwing expensive marble at a room. It means highly intentional, bespoke design that acts as a physical extension of your brand's identity.

When designing a successful coffeeshop, the magic is in the balance between breathtaking aesthetics and ruthless functionality. We look at the psychology and flow of the room:

  • The Barista Workflow: How smoothly can your team move behind the bar during a morning rush? Every inch of the counter layout impacts service speed and staff happiness.

  • The Customer Journey: Where does the line naturally form? Is it blocking the entrance or the seating area?

  • The Atmosphere: Does the lighting and acoustic treatment cater to the remote workers on a Tuesday afternoon just as well as it does a lively group of friends on a Saturday?

I founded SMN Design with a deeply personal, hands-on philosophy. We don’t do cookie-cutter concepts or replicate what the cafe down the street is doing. If you have a vision for a premium, unique hospitality experience, our team collaborates seamlessly to translate that vision into textures, lighting, layout, and custom millwork.

Are you mapping out a new coffeeshop concept? Or perhaps your current cafe is ready for a layout redesign to better handle your growing foot traffic? I would love to hear about what you're building.

Since we don't have an office for you to visit, let’s meet where it matters most: in front of a cup of coffee.

Warmly, Simone
